Long Beach State Beats USC, 5-1, For Series Victory

LOS ANGELES - Danny Espinosa went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer Sunday as the Long Beach State 49ers defeated the USC Trojans, 5-1, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. The 49ers won the series, two games to one, after dropping the Friday opener.
Espinosa broke a close game open in the seventh when he greeted USC reliever Shawn Olsen with a first-pitch homer to right. Omar Arif earned the win on the predetermined start for Long Beach State (2-1) while Andrew Liebel earned his first save of the season by throwing three effective innings, allowing just one single.
Sophomore Anthony Vasquez took the loss for the Trojans, going six innings. Vasquez allowed two runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Trojan designated hitter J.J. Owen had a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Robert Perry led off the game with a single to right on Vasquez's first pitch. Matt Cline advanced Perry to second on a sacrifice and Jason Corder's RBI single to left scored Perry. The Dirtbags made it a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Taylor Krick. Steve Tinoco scored the second run after leading off with a single and moving to third on two wild pitches by Vasquez.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the third with two outs, but Arif retired Matt Cusick on a groundout to second. Cusick came back later to give the Trojans their lone run in the fifth with an RBI single to left, scoring Derek Perren.
USC travels to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (Feb. 6) for a 2 p.m. game with a live audio broadcast on usctrojans.com.
