Jeff Tedford Signing Day Quotes

Feb. 7, 2007

BERKELEY - California head coach Jeff Tedford and the Golden Bears have signed another nationally-ranked recruiting class in 2007. Here are his thoughts during his signing day press conference held in the Hall of Fame room in Memorial Stadium.

General thoughts on the recruiting class:'I'm very excited today. It's been a great day for Cal football. The 2007 recruiting class, we feel like, is a huge success. We have addressed a lot of our needs, specifically on the offensive line to get five quality offensive linemen. On the defensive line, we have four defensive ends that are great athletes, can run and provide some very strong passing rushing abilities for us. We have a linebacking corps that's very solid and in the secondary, two corners that have size and a safety that has a lot of talent. We have a receiving unit that also has tremendous size, two guys that are 6 foot 2 inches tall, and really three that are all over 6 feet tall. We have two very quality tight ends, one a junior college tight end. One of the receivers is a transfer from Florida that we're really excited about who is in school right now. We have a very talented quarterback in Brock Mansion, who comes from Texas. He has great size, great speed and a very good arm. We're really excited about him. We have a lot of size and strength up front. We have a lot of speed and talent at our skilled positions. I want to say thank you to our staff. They have worked very hard in the recruiting process. We have more guys from out of state than we've ever had. That has obviously kind of spread our staff a little thin, but I thought they did a great job in recruiting those guys. I'd like to thank our players, because our players are instrumental in the recruiting process when we have people on campus. It's been a collaborative effort from everyone. We're really excited about this year's class and we're looking forward to the future.'

On recruiting out of California:'We're going to be a little bit more proactive with recruiting out of the state. We're not going to saturate the United States. We're still going to make sure that we saturate California and the western United States with our resources. There are certain areas where we've made some inroads and we're going to continue to go to those places. We have a lot of guys in the summer who visit us from out of state on unofficial visits, which gets the recruiting process going. In the last three years, I have seen our out-of-state recruiting really grow.'

On the defensive ends:'They're good young guys. They may be able to contribute right away. We're hoping one or maybe two can come in and play a vital role in what we're doing or at least contribute to what we're doing. They have very good size and speed. There are a couple of them, like Scott Smith, who have the size. Cameron Jordan has the size as well to be able to compete right away. We feel like they are going to help us at the defensive end spot.'

On the running game:'(Justin) Forsett will enter this year as our starter. We feel fortunate to have James Montgomery and Tracy Slocum, but the two guys coming in, Shane Vereen and Jahvid Best, are two guys coming in who will compete to contribute and play as freshmen. We'll have to see how that unfolds. They're both very talented players, very exciting guys to watch.'

On any redshirts:'I have no idea until they get here and compete. There are probably a couple guys there that are maybe undersized. Some guys who have to gain some weight, but besides that, everything's open for competition.

On Jahvid Best:'He is very elusive and very fast. He can cut on a dime, but when he gets in the open field, he has tremendous speed and can run away from people. You can't teach speed and he has plenty of it. You can see him do things physically that is going to translate to whatever level he plays. He really has a lot of skill, he has great balance, he has great lateral movement, and again, you can't teach speed. The way he runs and the speed he runs with, it's something pretty special. He's a great competitor.'

On Shane Vereen:'He was put at receiver position and got a lot of screens and had quite a few yards receiving this year. He's really used to catching the football and very natural with it. He played corner as well and made some great interceptions. He has excellent hands.'

On Chris Conte:'We found out (he was signing with us) for sure officially this morning. We were going back and forth it and I think he was struggling a little bit with his decision. It was very difficult to get him on the phone last night, but I felt like this was going to happen. I'm real proud of Chris to follow through with what he told us he was going to follow through with. I'm really looking forward to him getting here. He has great ability. He has that size we talked about, he's very rangy and he's a very tough guy, a very good tackler as well.'

On the offensive line:'I'm very pleased with our offensive line class. We have guys who are very physical and athletic. They're not big guys who can't move. They do have some size, but they're very athletic and they can move. We're going to open it up to competition right away for everybody. Everyone gets an equal chance from day one to come in and show what they can do.'

On Brock Mansion:'He has an excellent arm and a great escape dimension. He's very competitive and a student of the game. In the recruiting process, to be able to call him once a week and to go over his game plan, it was very evident to me that he's a guy who's very into it mentally, appreciates the quarterback position and what it takes to play that position. His size, his speed, his athleticism, his arm strength, he's a great talent and I can't wait until he gets here to be able to spend some time with him.'
