Feb. 8, 2007
Senior Michael Hilde, the defending champion on platform, and junior Kim Popp, second on the event last year, lead USC into the 2006-07 Pac-10 Men's and Women's Diving Championships Friday through Sunday (April 9-11) at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Hilde won the 2006 platform title with a winning score of 347.20. He was also fourth on 3-meter and fifth on 1-meter. His best Pac-10 showings on the springboard events were second places finishes in 2005.
Senior Kenny Jenkins has improved each year at the Pac-10 Championships, posting a second on platform last year and a pair of thirds on 1-meter and 3-meter.
Popp took second on platform at the 2006 conference meet with a 286.20, propelling her to a strong showing at the Zone E Championships and a 22nd finish on platform in her NCAA Championships debut. Her second place finish at the Pac-10 meet came after a 15th place as a freshman.
Junior Ali Tycast is another strong platform diver for the Trojans. She finished fourth at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships, a 10-place improvement from her freshman showing in 2005.
Eighth-year USC head diving coach Hongping Li has guided Trojan divers to 17 Pac-10 titles in his first seven seasons and his athletes have earned both Pac-10 Diver of the Year and Newcomer Diver of the Year five times.
Points earned from the Pac-10 Diving Championships will be applied to the team results of the upcoming 2006-07 Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships Feb. 14-17 in Long Beach, Calif., and to 2006-07 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships Feb. 21-24 in Federal Way, Wash.
