No. 5 Softball Opens Season With Two Wins Over Northwestern State

In the first game the Sun Devils were powered by Katie Burkhart's 11 strikeouts to keep the Demons quiet. The Sun Devils came out swinging, tabbing on two in the first with lead-off hitter Jessica Mapes taking a walk and a stolen base to open the inning followed with a single through the right side from Michelle Smith to bring home Mapes. After a wild pitch, Kaitlin Cochran stepped up to hit Smith home with a ground out to second, giving ASU a 2-0 lead.
The Sun Devils rattled off seven more hits and six more runs in the next four innings scoring two in each inning except the second to close out the game early in five innings. The game also saw the collegiate debuts of Clarissa Andorfer-Lopez, Caylyn Carlson, Katie Crabb and Ashley Muenz.
In the second game of the night, freshman pitcher, Megan Elliott got her first collegiate starting nod as well, taking her first win with six strikeouts and only four hits.
While ASU grabbed two runs in the second, they came out on fire in the third ratting off six hits for seven runs, highlighted with ASU's first home run of the season from First-Team All-American Kaitlin Cochran as she smashed a two-run shot over the right field wall. Kristen Miller followed suit with a solo shot over left field wall as the Sun Devils rolled to a 10-1 win.
