Elliott Throws a No-Hitter as No. 5 Softball Blanks Syracuse and New Mexico

TEMPE, Ariz. -Day one of the Kajikawa Classic kicked off Friday, which saw the No. 5 Sun Devils claim a no-hitter and a grand-slam in their doubleheader Friday night versus Syracuse and New Mexico. The Sun Devil's topped the Orange 11-0 in five innings and the Lobos 3-0 as they push their record to a perfect 4-0.


In the first game of the night, freshman pitcher Megan Elliott got her second collegiate start of her career and made the most of it as she secured her first no-hitter, blanking the Orange and only two walks from a perfect game. The Sun Devils offense was red hot as well, with four hits for five runs in the first to jump ahead of the Orange.


The Devils slammed the door shut in the third as they loaded the bases for Rhiannon Baca's walk-off grand slam over center field, to push them ahead to 9-0 before tabbing on two in the fourth with Elliott taking the Devils home keeping Syracuse off the board.


In the nightcap, the Sun Devils faced off with the Lobos for the 40th time in series history, and for the 34th time, ASU came out with a win as Katie Burkhart blanked New Mexico with 15 strikeouts and only two hits on the night, with ASU winning 3-0.


After grabbing a run in the third, ASU tacked on two more in the fourth after a lead-off single to left from Rhiannon Baca followed with a double to right center from freshman. Ashley Muenz, who was brought home by a Jackie Vasquez single to right, bringing the score to 3-0.


The No. 5 Devils are now 4-0 on the season with the Kajikawa Classic rolling on tomorrow with ASU facing Wisconsin at 5:30 p.m. and Western Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be played following the NCAA Championship match-up of Arizona and Northwestern at 3:30 p.m. at ASU's Farrington Stadium.
