SEATTLE - Sophomore Ashley Houghting captured one event title and shared another win to lead Washington to its highest team score in nearly two years Friday, but the Huskies fell just shy of upsetting No. 14 Arizona, 195.300-193.925, at Bank of America Arena.

Washington (1-4), which was without one of its top scorers in senior Chelsea Bakken, built excitement throughout the arena for a potential upset after outstanding performances in its first two rotations, including a vault score of 48.950 that was its second-highest of the year, and a season-best bars score of 48.950. All five of the Huskies' scorers on bars achieved career-best marks, led by a 9.825 from junior Nikki Waiss and a 9.750 from senior Tori Quandt.

The Huskies trailed by just three-tenths of a point after the second rotation before the Wildcats (4-1) slammed the door shut, outscoring Washington 48.550-47.900 in the third rotation, and closing the meet with an outstanding 48.900 score on beam to clinch the win.

Sophomore Ashley Houghting showed few effects from a weeklong illness, earning her second floor victory of the season with a 9.825 in UW's final performance of the night, and sharing a win on vault with a 9.850. The vault win was the 11th of Houghting's career, bringing her to within one of Kelly McDonald's UW career record.

Houghting and Waiss were two of four Huskies to top the 9.8 mark at the meet. Sophomore Kristen Omori's 9.825 was good for a tie for third on vault, while freshman Cassidy Lance's 9.800 earned a tie for fifth in the event.

First-year head coach Joanne Bowers said that despite the season-high team score and some terrific individual performances, the Huskies should not be content with performing well in defeat.

'We started the meet like gangbusters,' she said, 'but by the end of the meet we had some mental lapses. The girls didn't come together as a team. I know we had our best score of the year, and I'm happy about that, but I'm not satisfied, and I don't want them to be satisfied either.'

Washington returns to competition next Sunday at Cal, before returning to Seattle for its final home meet of the 2007 season on Feb. 23 vs. Oregon State and Seattle Pacific. For more information on Husky gymnastics, visit
