No. 15 USC Men Keep Streak Alive, Top No. 44 Fresno State 5-2

Feb. 9, 2007

The No. 15 USC men's tennis team matched its best season start since 1999 by posting its sixth straight win of the year in a 5-2 decision over visiting No. 44 Fresno State on Friday at Marks Stadium. The Trojans have a long way to go if they hope to match the all-time best season-opening win streak in USC history - a 32-match stretch reached in 1991 - but the current six-match streak is some helpful momentum as USC next turns to face #18 Boise State tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Marks Stadium.

The doubles point was a relatively tight one, as Robert Farah / Kaes Van't Hof's 8-4 win at the No. 2 position was followed by an identical score in a Fresno State victory at the No. 3 position, as Bulldogs Leiby/Siwy topped USC's Adam Loucks / Garrett Snyder. At the No. 1 slot, however, senior pair Jamil Al-Agba / Dejan Cvetkovic kept their undefeated doubles record intact with an 8-5 win over Cech/Zapletal to clinch the double point for the Trojans.

In singles, once again, USC raced right ahead to put the victory away with three straight wins. Two Trojan freshmen tacked up the first two singles points, as Gary Sacks beat Flavio Mollinedo 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position, and #91 Jason McNaughton cruised past Charles Irie 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot to get USC ahead 3-0. Junior Kaes Van't Hof finished off the winning run with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory from his No. 2 singles position, beating out Fresno State's Mirko Zapletal. The Bulldogs grabbed their first point of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win by Tejesvi Veerapall over Garrett Snyder at No. 5. That left the No. 1 and No. 3 matches still going strong. At No. 3, USC newcomer Robert Farah pulled out a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Rudolf Siwy, while the three-set battle at No. 1 ended in Fresno State's favor, as #26 Jakub Cech held on to win the final tiebreaker and take the match over USC's Dejan Cvetkovic 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4).

USC now hosts #18 Boise State at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 10) for the Trojans' seventh of eight consecutive home matches.
