UMass Stuns No. 10 California, 1-0
Feb. 10, 2007
SAN DIEGO - The tenth-ranked California Golden Bear softball team suffered its first setback of the season with a 1-0 loss to UMass at the Campbell-Cartier Classic on Saturday afternoon. Cal concludes the tournament later tonight vs. UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
The Bears (2-1) had an early scoring opportunity in the top of the first inning, but could not advance Morgan Siegel from third base with two outs, as Bernice Masaniai grounded out to the short stop to end the inning.
UMass took advantage of a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the first and scored the lone run of the game when Cal freshman pitcher Marissa Drewrey walked Amada Acampora to plate Amanda Morin from third.
Cal had one last chance to tie the score or take the lead in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and no outs. However the threat was ended when Julie Meyer lined out to the first baseman for the first out, followed by consecutive strikeouts by Carly Winger and Siegel.
Despite the loss, Drewrey was still impressive in her first collegiate start, allowing just one run on two hits with a strikeout in six innings of work. However UMass relied on the strong pitching performance from Brandice Balmschmiter (four hits over seven innings and six strikeouts) for its first win of the season.
