Stock Market Up During USC's 4-3 Win In 10 Innings At No. 17 San Diego

Feb. 11, 2007

SAN DIEGO - Matt Cusick's RBI single proved to be the difference Sunday as the USC Trojans defeated the No. 17 San Diego Toreros, 4-3, in 10 innings at Cunningham Stadium. Freshman Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) earned his second save of the season after starting the game as a catcher, the first time this season he has played as a pitcher and catcher in the same game.

Head coach Chad Kreuter made the switch to the 17-year-old Stock in the 10th with one out and runners at first and second. Stock retired Josh Romanski on a groundout with both runners advancing. After USC (5-3) intentionally walked Justin Snyder to load the bases, Stock got Kevin Muno to fly out to left for the save as the Trojans earned the series win.

Paul Koss (1-0) got the win for the Trojans with 1 1/3 innings while freshman Brad Boxberger (Tustin/Foothill HS) started the game and did not allow a run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

San Diego stranded 15 runners in the game and fell to 6-3 on the season

The Trojans had a 3-0 lead after Lucas Duda walked with the bases loaded in the third, followed by a two-run double from second baseman Michael Torres. The Toreros got on the scoreboard in the eighth on Logan Gelbrich's two-run homer to left. In the ninth, San Diego tied the game on Jordan Abruzzo's RBI double to center with one out. Shane Buschini was intentionally walked and Koss retired James Meador and Sean Nicol to force extra innings.

Nick Buss hit a one-out double down the left field line in the 10th for the Trojans, followed by back-to-back singles by Grant Green and Cusick.

San Diego led off the 10th on Gelbrich's single, but when Mike Metzger faked a bunt and pulled his bat back, Stock was able to throw out Gelbrich at second. Metzger then reached on an infield single, followed by a bunt single from Kevin Hansen before Stock was inserted on the mound.

Snyder went 3-for-4 for the Toreros after going 5-for-6 in Saturday's 12-6 win at USC's Dedeaux Field.

USC travels to Pepperdine for a 1:30 p.m. game on Tuesday (Feb. 13). The game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
