No. 3 UCLA Softball Run-Rules UC Riverside, 14-0

Feb. 13, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Senior second baseman Lisa Dodd crushed a first-inning grand slam and Kaila Shull and Jaisa Creps also knocked homers as third-ranked UCLA opened its 2007 home slate with a five-inning, run-rule victory with a 14-0 win over UC Riverside on Tuesday afternoon at Easton Stadium.

UCLA sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four. The inning opened with a walk drawn by Krista Colburn and a sacrifice bunt by Shull. A Megan Langenfeld single gave the Bruins runners on the corners and a walk to Jodie Legaspi loaded the bases. Dodd then connected on a grand slam home run, her first longball of the season, to give UCLA a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Tara Henry led off the second inning with a slap-hit infield single, stole second base and came home on a home run to center by Shull, her third homer of the season.

The flood gates truly opened in the bottom of the fourth as the Bruins pushed eight runs across the plate, opening the frame with singles by Creps, Henry and Colburn. Three batters later, Legaspi knocked a two-RBI double off the center field wall to give UCLA a 10-0 edge. The Bruins added four more runs in the inning on an RBI single by Dodd and a three-run homer by Creps.

Bruin junior hurler Anjelica Selden allowed just one hit in the five-inning complete game, retiring the first 11 batters in order before giving up a two-out double to UCR catcher Cassie Greenawalt in the top of the fourth inning. That would be the only Highlander to reach base as the Bruins needed just 82 minutes to earn the victory.

Eight of the nine UCLA batters notched at least one hit, with Henry going 3-for-3 and two runs scored. Dodd, Creps and Whitney Holum each had two hits with Dodd notching five RBIs followed by Creps and Shull with three apiece and Legaspi with two.

Selden's one-hitter was her first such outing since March 12, 2006, against Mississippi State. The Bruin junior fanned nine UCR batters without allowing a walk to improve to 1-2 on the season. UCR's Sara Radabaugh (0-1) took the loss, allowing five hits and six runs in 1 2/3 innings.

The Bruins are back in action this weekend as UCLA heads to Las Vegas for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. The schedule has UCLA facing Colorado State and Central Florida on Friday, Oklahoma State and host UNLV on Saturday, and wrapping up the weekend against Wright State on Sunday.
