Stanford Blows By Sacramento State, 13-2
Feb. 13, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team tallied 10 hits and cruised to a 13-2 victory in its home-opener against Sacramento State today at Smith Family Stadium. Sophomore Maddy Coon smacked two doubles, while Tricia Aggabao had two hits and three RBI. Stanford improves to 4-2 with the win, while Sacramento State falls to 2-3.
After Missy Penna whiffed three-straight Hornet batters to start the game, the Cardinal offense got to work with a five-run first inning. Jackie Rinehart walked and advanced to third on Coon's first double of the day. Erin Howe loaded the bases with a two-out walk and Michelle Smith earned a walk on the following at bat to bring in Rinehart. Penna drove in two with a single to left field, and Aggabao drove in two more with another single.
The Hornets scored their only runs of the game in the second inning. Kayla Meeks drew a two-out walk before center fielder Jenice Bartee blasted a home run over the left field fence.
Stanford silenced any talk of a Hornet comeback in the third inning, as the team racked up six more runs to take an 11-2 lead. With two outs and Michelle Schroeder on first base, the Cardinal put together a rally. Penna was hit by a pitch and Aggabao drove in Schroeder for her third RBI of the day. Anna Beardman, who led the team with five triples last season, sent her first one of 2007 through the left side, scoring Penna and Aggabao. After Alissa Haber walked, Rinehart drove in Beardman with a single, and Coon's second double of the day drove in both runners.
Stanford sealed the win in the fourth inning, with another pair of runs to take an 11-run lead. Aggabao reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on a single by Haber. Beardman also reached on a fielder's choice in the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rinehart.
The Cardinal held the Hornets scoreless in the top of the fifth, ending the game at 13-2. Missy Penna picked up her third win of the season, and posted six strikeouts.
Stanford continues its home stretch this weekend, hosting the Stanford Invitational, Friday through Sunday. The first game of the event, between Santa Clara and Pacific, is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday. The Cardinal will open the Invitational with a contest with the Broncos at 2 p.m. and follow with a game against Missouri at 4 p.m.
