#16 Swim Team Stands in 5th-Place After Day One of Pac-10 Championships

The No. 16 UCLA swim team stands in a tie for fifth-place (96 points) after day one of the swimming portion of the Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, CA. Only two events were contested on Wednesday evening - the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay.

Cal stands in first-place (120 points), followed by Stanford with 118 points and USC and Oregon State tied for third with 100 points.

In the opening event, the 200 Medley Relay, the Bruin team of senior Katie Arnold, junior Nicolette, Teo, senior Amy Thurman and junior Katherine Wong finished fifth overall in a time of 1:41.10. The

In the 800 Freestyle Relay, the team of sophomores Anna Poteete and Silke Nowotzin, senior Katie Nelson and junior Shannon Hackett placed seventh, swimming 7:23.11.

Both relay times were NCAA 'B' qualifiers.

Although the divers put the Bruins in first-place after the dive portion of the conference meet, diving points are not factored into the point total until later in the meet. One meter results will be added during Thursday's competition, with three-meter factoring in on Friday and platform on Saturday.

Competition resumes tomorrow at 11:00 am with the prelims of the 500 Freestyle, 200 IM, 50 Free and 200 Freestyle Relay.
