Box Score

BERKELEY - Thanks to a big six-run fourth inning, the No. 10-ranked California Golden Bear softball team defeated visiting San Jose State, 9-1 in the season's home-opener at Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday. The game was called after the fifth inning because of the implemented mercy rule.

The Bears improved to 4-1 on the season and return to action on the road for their second tournament of the season at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas hosted by UNLV, Feb. 16-18. Cal opens tournament play vs. Mississippi State on Feb. 16 at 9:00 a.m.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Frankiewicz (2-0) collected her second win of the season allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Freshman Christina Schallig finished the afternoon 1-for-2 with two runs and three RBI, while junior Katie Vickers had four RBI.

California took advantage of Spartan miscues in the first inning and built a 1-0 lead when Morgan Siegel scored from third base on a throwing error by SJSU pitcher, Kelly Harrison.

The Bears added to their lead with two more runs in the third inning. A Vickers sacrifice bunt allowed Erika Racklin, who led the inning off with a bunt single, to score from third base. Schallig would then later score on a wild pitch to put the Bears up, 3-0.

San Jose State (1-3) scored in the fourth inning courtesy of a solo home run by Sarah Smith.

California put the game out of reach for the Spartans with a dominant fourth inning. In fact all six runs came with two outs. Schallig's single to center field plated both Carly Winger and Julie Meyer. After Bernice Masaniai was issued a walk to load the bases, Vickers delivered with a double to right field that cleared the bases, giving Cal a 9-1 lead.

Freshman Marissa Drewrey pitched the top of the fifth inning and retired all three SJSU batters to preserve the Golden Bear victory.

Cal has now outscored its opponents 20-2 in the first four innings this season ... The Bears improve to 44-5 all-time vs. San Jose State ... Schallig leads the team with a .417 batting average ... The Cal pitching staff has a combined 0.70 ERA.
