Vollmer Wins 50-Free Prelim at Pac-10 Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - California sophomore Dana Vollmer won the 50-yard freestyle preliminary and led a charge of seven Golden Bears who reached A finals on Thursday, the second day of the Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Cal leads the conference meet after two complete events.

Today's finals begin at 6 p.m.

Along with Vollmer, who swam a lifetime-best and NCAA A cut 22.57 in the 50 free, junior Emily Silver, senior Erin Reilly, freshman Blake Hayter, senior Sherry Tsai, junior Rachel Ridgeway and freshman Courtney Eronemo reached tonight's A finals for the Bears.

Silver took second place in the 50 free with a time of (22.66, NCAA), while Reilly (4:45.49, NCAA B, 2nd) and Hayter (lifetime-best 4:46.29, NCAA B, 3rd) qualified for tonight's final of the 500 free. Tsai (lifetime-best 2:01.09, NCAA B, 5th), Ridgeway 2:01.61, NCAA B, 7th) and Eronemo (lifetime-best 2:01.73, NCAA B, 8th) advanced in the 200 individual medley.

Cal also put two swimmers in tonight's B finals: Freshman Lauren Boyle (4:50.57, NCAA B, 14th, 500 free) and freshman Heather White (lifetime-best 2:02.12, NCAA B, 9th, 200 IM).
