Cal Baseball Tops UNLV, 8-4

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Powered by a five-run second inning and solid pitching from sophomore left-hander Craig Bennigson, the California baseball team topped UNLV, 8-4, Friday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 5-2 and the Rebels dropped to 4-6. Bennigson picked up his first collegiate victory, throwing a career-high 6.0 innings with three hits, one run, three walks and a career-high six strikeouts. It was only his third start of his college career.
Hitting stars for Cal were junior second baseman Josh Satin and sophomore first baseman David Cooper with three RBI apiece. The Bears scored a run in the bottom of the first inning when senior third baseman Stephen Carlson led off with a triple off of UNLV starter Craig Heyer (1-2, 5.0 innings, six hits, eight runs, six earned runs, three walks, five strikeouts) and was then plated by Cooper's sacrifice fly to center field.The Bears exploded for five runs in the second, highlighted by sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler's two-run double, an RBI single by Satin and a two-run double to center field by Cooper. Cal tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single to right field by Satin.
After Bennigson had limited UNLV to a lone run in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Calvin Beamon, the Rebels scored three runs off of Bear reliever Nick Nunez in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk by Elfen Navarro, Jr., a fielder's choice RBI by Beamon and an RBI double by Braden Walker. Cal relievers Sean Watson and Dane Ferguson were able to get the Bears out of the seventh and sophomore reliever Matt Gorgen threw the final two innings (two hits, no runs, one walk, four strikeouts) to preserve the win.
Satin finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Cooper, who is hitting .520 for the season (13-for-25), was 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Cal will next host UNLV in the second game of the three game series, Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
