Huskies Drop Baseball Opener, 10-1, To Cal Poly

Feb. 16, 2007

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Washington baseball team opened the 2007 season with a 10-1 loss at Cal Poly Friday evening at Baggett Stadium. Hot-hitting third baseman Brent Morel led the way for the Mustangs, driving in three runs with a pair of doubles.

Morel entered the game with a .481 average. His two-out, bases-clearing double in the third opened the scoring for Cal Poly. The Mustangs, who lost their first five games of the season, improved to 6-6 with the win.

Cal Poly starter Marc Norbriga (2-1) earned the win. He threw six innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four. He didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the fifth.

Husky starter Nick Hagadone (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering eight runs (four earned) on six hits over four and two-thirds innings.

Cal Poly took advantage of a leadoff walk and an error to open the scoring in the third. After Joshua Thomas led off with a walk, Ryan Lee bunted back to the mound, but Hagadone was unable to field it cleanly, leaving runners at first and second with no outs.

Luke Yoder followed with a sacrifice to move the runners up and, after a strikeout and another walk loaded the bases with two outs, Morel lined a double to deep left field, driving in all three with the first hit in the game for either team.

Washington's lone baserunner through the first four innings reached on an error and the Huskies hadn't mustered any offense until Kyle Conley led off the fifth with a walk. After a strikeout, a stolen base and a groundout moved Conley to third with two outs, junior catcher Joey Dunn drove in the run with the UW's first hit of the game, a single to left, cutting the Mustangs lead to 3-1.

However, Poly answered quickly with four more runs in the fifth. After a leadoff single and a bunt, Grant Desme singled to score one. Morel followed with his second double to put runners at second and third. After a second out, pinch hitter Quentin Cate singled to score two more, increasing the lead to 6-3.

The outburst continued with a run-scoring double from Kyle Smith that chased Hagadone. Then, Thomas greeted UW reliever Geoff Nichols with a two-run homer to left, staking the hosts to a 9-1 lead.

Cal Poly added another run in the sixth. Morel finished 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Mustangs. Conley went 1-for-2 with a run, a stolen base and two walks for the UW.

The series continues Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Live stats and live audio will both be available on
