No. 1 Stanford Tops No. 5 USC 5-2 In Pac-10 Opener

STANFORD, Calif.- Returning to the court for the first time in almost two weeks, No. 1 Stanford defeated No. 5 USC 5-2 on Friday afternoon in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.

The Cardinal (4-1) won the doubles point for the fourth time in five matches this year. The only exception came in Stanford's last contest, a 4-3 loss to then-No. 6 Georgia Tech on Feb. 3 that snapped an NCAA record 89-match winning streak.

That's also the last time Stanford took the court, thanks to a second postponement last week against Sacramento State due to rain.

On Friday, the Cardinal was anything but rusty. Singles victories at the bottom of the lineup secured the victory.

After winning the doubles point, USC knotted the match at 1-1 following Lindsey Nelson's 6-3, 6-4 upset of No. 89 Theresa Logar at the No. 1 position.

No. 13 Celia Durkin's 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot put Stanford back up 2-1 in the match until USC's Sarah Fansler knocked off Anne Yelsey 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 to tie the match at 2-2.

Wins at the bottom four spots, including No. 8 Jessica Nguyen's 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 clincher at the No. 4 position, iced Stanford's fourth win of the year.

Stanford wraps up its homestand tomorrow against No. 15 UCLA at noon.
