Bears Get Back On Track with Win over UCSB

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team snapped its four-match losing streak with a 7-0 shut out over UC Santa Barbara, Saturday afternoon at the Berkeley Tennis Club. The Golden Bears got back to a record of .500 (4-4) with the win.

Cal won all six singles matches in straight sets. The closest a Gaucho came to winning a set was on the sixth court. Sophomore Geoff Chizever was in a battle against UCSB's Nigel Barton in the first set, but Chizever won the set and the match, 7-5, 6-3.

Chizever was one of three Bears to win in singles and doubles. In doubles, Chizever and sophomore Eoin Heavey beat Bijan Hejazi and Max Taylor, 8-4. Heavey also beat Taylor in singles, 6-0, 6-3. The other Cal player to win two matches was senior Tyler Browne. Browne and fellow senior John Pettit beat Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson, 8-6. Browne faced Dalskov later in singles on court two and Browne once again came away with the victory, 6-2. 6-4.

On the No. 1 court, junior Pierre Mouillon knocked off Hejazi, 6-4. 6-4. Junior Ken Nakahara and freshman Kallim Stewart earned singles wins as well.

Cal stays in Berkeley but returns to the Hellman Tennis Center next weekend. The next match for the Bears is Friday, Feb. 23 when they host Arizona at 1:30 p.m. The next day, Cal goes up against Arizona State at 12:00 p.m.
