Erin McCleave Sets School Record at Pac-10 Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Washington State senior Erin McCleave set a school record in the 1650 freestyle Saturday in the final day of competition at the 2007 Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships. WSU finished ninth with 378 total points. The Arizona Wildcats claimed their second straight Pac-10 championship while Stanford came in second place.

Erin McCleave placed third overall in the first event of the day, the 1650 freestyle. Her time of 16:15.16 was an NCAA Qualifying time, her second of the competition, and broke her own school record dating back to 2005. The time was also a career best for McCleave.

Lina Daugvilaite and Laurie Gregg also scored for WSU in the 1650 freestyle. Daugvilaite placed 22nd in the event with a season-best time of 17:14.48 while Gregg finished in 24th. Her time of 17:25.20 was also a season-best for the senior.

In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Elyse Peterson earned her second NCAA 'B' Consideration time. She placed 13th in the event with a final time of 2:17.00, a career best. It was the second 'B' Consideration time of the competition for Peterson.

Monika Povilonyte swam a season best time of 2:18.43 to place 20th in the 200 breaststroke while freshman Shawna Keller finished 22nd overall with a career best time of 2:19.90.

Freshman Michaela Ahlin earned an NCAA 'B' Consideration Standard time in the 200 butterfly. She finished 14th overall with a career best time of 2:02.21.

As a team, WSU finished seventh in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.28.

The Cougars broke a seven-year old school record Friday in the 400 medley relay. The combination of Afton Pickett, Elyse Peterson, Michaela Ahlin and Erin McCleave recorded a time of 3:45.36 to take seventh place and set the WSU record. The previous record dated back to 2000.

Washington State will now prepare for the NCAA Championships. The competition begins March 8 in Minneapolis, Minn. and concludes March 10.
