Husky Gymnasts Sweep Cal for First Pac-10 Win

Feb. 18, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore Ashley Houghting won three events and Kelly Gilbert, Tori Quandt and Nikki Waiss all earned their first-career wins Sunday, leading the 33rd-ranked Washington gymnastics team to a sweep of individual crowns and a 194.800-193.025 win over Pac-10 rival Cal at Berkeley's Haas Pavilion.

Washington's (2-4) win was its eighth-straight over Cal and its first against a Pac-10 opponent this season. The Huskies' sweep of individual titles was its second this year, while its team score of 194.800 was more than a full point higher than its previous season-best, and the best by a UW team in nearly two years.

Sophomore Ashley Houghting (Welland, Ont.) earned wins on three events, including a UW career record-tying 12th victory on vault. Houghting's 9.875 vault score was the highest of the day by a UW gymnast, and tied the Washington career record of 12 vault wins set by Klara Kudilkova from 1995-98.

Houghting also earned her first-career victory in the all-around with a career-best score of 39.025, and shared top honors on floor with a 9.850. The sophomore's three wins upped her total through the season's first six meets to eight, and raised her career mark to 16.

The multiple-winner was joined in the awards recognition by junior Nikki Waiss, sophomore Kelly Gilbert and senior Tori Quandt, each of whom earned the first victories of their UW careers.

Mill Creek native Waiss sparked the Huskies to a season-high bars score of 48.625 in the first rotation, her 9.850 a season-best and the second-highest bars score of her UW career.

Waiss' bars win, followed by Houghting's victories on vault and floor, helped the Huskies to a nearly-insurmountable 1.775-point lead entering the final rotation, before Gilbert and Quandt slammed the door shut with matching 9.800s on beam.

In all, four Huskies earned event victories and six earned scores of 9.800 or higher, lifting Washington to its most convincing Pac-10 win since a 195.850-193.600 win over this same Cal squad in January of 2004.

The GymDawgs return home Friday, welcoming 16th-ranked Oregon State and Seattle Pacific to Bank of America Arena for the final home meet of the 2007 season. Washington's three seniors - Chelsea Bakken, Tori Quandt and Darcee Schiller - will be recognized in a special ceremony prior to the meet, which begins at 7 p.m.
