Stannard Heads to Mexico with U-20s
Feb. 19, 2007
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford freshman Kristin Stannard heads to Mexico this week to compete with the U-20 Women's National Team. Stannard was one of 18 players selected by Head Coach Jillian Ellis to compete in two games against the full Mexico Women's National Team.
Stannard had a standout rookie season in 2006, and was one of the top five scorers on the Cardinal squad. She netted four goals and posted two assists, and was a key part of the Cardinal freshman fivesome that was responsible for nearly half of the team's 2006 offense. Stannard appeared in all 23 contests for the Cardinal, and was named to the All-Pac-10 Second Team and the All-Pac-10 Freshman Team.
These will be the first full international matches for the U-20s during the new cycle, as the team begins the long road to the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup to be held sometime in the early fall in Chile. The U.S. team will face Mexico on Feb. 20 and 22 at 4 p.m. in Ixtapan de la Sal, located about 80 miles from Mexico City. Stannard is one of seven midfielders and three Pac-10 players on the traveling roster.
