Track Preps For Big 12 Indoor Championships

BOULDER-The University of Colorado indoor track and field teams will leave the Boulder campus Thursday, Feb. 22, to compete in the 11th annual Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24 at the Lied Recreational Center on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

 

The multi-events will kick off the weekend events on Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT). The running events will start at 1:40 p.m. on Friday with the prelims of the women's 60-meters, while the finals of the event will kick off the running events at 1:30 on Saturday. The field events will start at 2 p.m. on Friday with women's weight throw and at noon on Saturday with the men's high jump and women's triple jump.

 

Last year, the men finished seventh, while the women came in 11th. The best finish at the Big 12 Championship for the Buffs was in 1999 when the men claimed second place. The highest the women have ever finished was third in 1997.

 

Brent Vaughn is the only Buff returning to the indoor conference championships to defend his title. Vaughn won the 3k in 2005 and 2006 and the 5k in 2005.

The Colorado Buffaloes have six individuals who have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. Ryan Campbell recorded a mark of 6.72 in the 60-meters, which ranks 24th in the nation and a time of 21.15 in the 200 (16th). Jeremy Dodson ran the 10th fastest time in the country in the 200 at 21.12, a CU record. Barringer also ranks in the top-25 in the mile (22nd, 4:45.40) and the 3,000-meters (16th, 9:21.56). Anthony Chiulli owns a provisional mark in the mile (4:03.82) and Pete Janson and Brent Vaughn own marks in the 3,000-meters.

Cortney Hutmacher also ranks in the top-25 in the weight throw (61-00.00). She is 25th overall.

Following the conference championships, the Buffs will have one more opportunity to qualify for this year's NCAA Championships.   Select athletes will travel to a last chance meet March 2 or 3 and those qualifiers will compete at the national championships, March 10-11, in Fayetteville, Ark.
