Cardinal Swimmers Continue Success At Second Day Of Pac-10 Championships

Stanford men's swimming continues to lead after day two of the Pac-10 Swimming Championships in Federal Way, Wash. The Cardinal have tallied 352 points, which includes the points Stanford earned from the 1-meter diving event at the Pac-10 Men's Diving Championships. California took over second place with 229 points, followed closely behind by Arizona with 217 points.
The second day of action began with Stanford claiming two of the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle finals. Shaun Phillips captured second place in a time of 4:18.00, with teammate Andy Grant claiming third in a time of 4:21.04. Lauren Jensen from USC took the top spot in a time of 4:13.52. Other Cardinal swimmers in the event were Daniel Beal placing eighth (4:31.62) and Phillip Morrison finishing 11 (4:24.88).
The 200 IM produced similar results for the Cardinal, this time with Nate Cass earning a second place finish in 1:45.92 and Hongzhe Sun taking third in a time of 1:46.12. Arizona's Adam Ritter took first with a time of 1:45.51. Keenan Newman placed seventh for the Cardinal (1:47.97), followed by teammates Paul Kornfeld in eighth (1:49.27), Scott Lathrope in 11 (1:49.29), Paul Zaich in 12 (1:49.80) and David Ash in 18 (1:50.86).
Cardinal co-captain Ben Wildman-Tobriner continued his successful season as he captured first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.23. Jernej Godec recorded a second place finish for Cal (19.75, while Stanford's Alex Coville rounded out the top three in a time of 19.84. Following close behind were teammates Jason Dunord (19.91) and Matt Crowe (19.94) in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Kyle Ransom swam to a 14 place finish in a time of 20.27.
Stanford added to its already outstanding day with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Wildman-Tobriner, Dunford, Ransom and Crowe finished in a time of 1:17.50, with Cal (1:18.05) and Arizona (1:18.36) rounding out the top three.
Action continues tomorrow at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center with the prelims beginning at 11:00am (PST) and the finals at 6:00pm (PST).
