Women's Tennis Sweeps Doubles Despite Falling to #1 Stanford

The #22 ranked Arizona State Women's Tennis team came out strong against #1 Stanford sweeping the doubles matches, but fell to the Cardinal 4-3. The Devils are now 6-2 on the season and 2-1 in Pac-10 play.

In doubles, seniors Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke defeated Lindsay Burdette and Anne Yelsey, 8-1. The duo is now 6-1 in dual doubles this season.

Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch also defeated Leila Hodzic and Jessica Nguyen in a close match, 9-7; and completing the sweep in doubles, Rebecca Rankin and Laila Abdala defeated Whitney Deason and Theresa Loger, 8-5.

In singles play, playing in the number two spot, freshman Nadia Abdala defeated Yelsey 6-1, 6-3. Laila Abdala also picked up the win defeating Hodzic 6-1, 6-0.

In the number one spot, Capannolo fell to Loger 6-4, 6-4. Also coming up short for the Devils was Clarke falling to Nguyen 6-2, 6-3, Rankin was defeated by Deason 7-6, 6-2 and Pooler was defeated by Burdette 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The Sun Devils return to action Saturday, Feb. 24 to take on the #7 California Bears at 12pm MT at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.
