Bears Take Down Sun Devils

Feb. 24, 2007

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team played a superb match against Arizona State, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears beat the Sun Devils, 5-0. Doubles matches weren't played after a rain delay. Cal improved its record to 6-4, while ASU lost its second match of the season, and the weekend, as it fell to 6-2.

No. 18 Pierre Mouillon clinched the win for Cal when he beat Matt Brooklyn on the No. 1 court, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Tyler Browne got the ball rolling with the first win of the day, a straight-set victory over Juan Rebaza, 6-3, 6-0.

The Bears were happy to see senior Daniel Sebescen return to the courts on Saturday for his first match of the dual season.

Junior Ken Nakahara and sophomore Eoin Heavey contributed to Cal's decisive victory, as they each turned in straight-set victories. Heavey beat Wes Miller, 6-3, 6-2, while Nakahara got the best of Murilo Souza, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Kallim Stewart got back in the win column after a tough loss yesterday. The win didn't come easy for Stewart. After losing the first set, the match went to a third-set tiebreaker, just like his loss yesterday. This time Stewart would take advantage of his opportunity to win, as he knocked off T.J. Bellama, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0.

Next weekend, Cal travels to Southern California and it will compete in the Pacific Coast Doubles tournament from March 2-4 in La Jolla, Calif.
