No. 15 UCLA Baseball Drops Rubber Game to No. 10 Cal State Fullerton, 7-2

Los Angeles - No. 15 UCLA fell to No. 10 Cal State Fullerton, 7-2, in Sunday afternoon's rubber game at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Freshman left fielder Justin Uribe hit 2-for-2 and drew two walks and sophomore Brandon Crawford and center fielder Tim Murphy each tallied one double.
Cal State Fullerton right-hander Sean Urena (3-0) picked up his third victory of the season after allowing two runs (one earned) off six hits and four walks in 7.2 innings pitched. The Rialto, Calif. native struck out five hitters and made 119 pitches. UCLA left-hander Gavin Brooks (1-1) was charged with the loss.
The Titans (9-4) scored once in the third and added three runs in the fifth inning to assume a 4-0 lead. In the top of the third, center fielder Clark Hardman delivered a two-out single to right, scoring right fielder Chris Jones from second base.
In the three-run fifth, Cal State Fullerton's Hardman drove in second baseman Joel Weeks and Jones from third and second, respectively, with out one to give the Titans a 3-0 advantage. Hardman stole second base and reached third on a pass ball before scoring on catcher John Curtis' two-out base-hit to right. Cal State Fullerton added two more runs in the eighth inning to lead 6-0.
UCLA (7-7) answered with a two-run eighth, taking advantage of three hits and one error. With one out, shortstop Brandon Crawford hit a double to right field and moved to third on right fielder Gabe Cohen's fly out to deep center. Tim Murphy blasted a double to center, scoring Crawford. Uribe singled to the shortstop, sending Murphy to third. Haerther reached first base on a fielding error by Weeks, allowing Murphy to score UCLA's second run.
Brooks allowed four runs (two earned) off four hits in 4.2 innings as the Bruins' starter. The left-hander from Vista, Calif. struck out two and issued three walks. Freshman right-hander Garett Claypool allowed two runs off three hits in 2.2 innings. Sophomore southpaw Brendan Lafferty recorded 0.2 scoreless innings of relief. Redshirt junior right-hander Brant Rustich allowed one run off a triple in the ninth inning.
The Bruins return to action Friday, March 9 when they travel to Mississippi for a three-game series. First pitch of game one in Oxford, Miss. is slated for 4:30 p.m. (PST).
Game Notes: Redshirt freshman Corey Ashner earned his first career start Sunday afternoon and played third base; redshirt senior Nolan Rouse was scratched from the starting lineup prior to game time with a right arm injury...Ashner recorded his first collegiate hit when he led off the bottom of the sixth with a base hit up the middle...Uribe's batting average rose to .348 with his 2-for-2 afternoon...Crawford has hit in 13 of UCLA's 14 games this season.
