Feb. 25, 2007

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Even with Katie Burkhart striking out 15 and Bianca Cruz going two-for-three at the plate, the No. 2 ASU Softball team suffered their first loss of the season to the 2006 National Championship runner-up, the No. 7 Northwestern Wildcats. The Sun Devils went 1-1 on the night as they rallied back after the loss to beat OklahomaState 7-2 in the nightcap. ASU is now 16-1 on the year with one game remaining in the 2007 Palm Springs Classic.

Game one saw a pitchers duel as ASU's Katie Burkhart took the mound against Northwestern's Eileen Canney. Both pitchers silenced the bats until the third inning when both ASU and NW were able to tack one on the board apiece. ASU rallied for the go-ahead run in the sixth after a lead-off single from Bianca Cruz was brought home with a double to right from Mindy Cowles.

Northwestern wasn't finished yet though, as with one-out the `Cats loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a hit batter, giving left-fielder, Kelly Dyer the opportunity to dig in on an 1-2 count and lift a grand slam over the left center wall, pushing the `Cats to a 5-2 win.

ASU rallied back from the loss in game two though, as they took on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The Cowgirls struck first as a Shanel Scott hit a lead-off triple that was brought home after Courtney Totte hit a sacrifice fly to left field to push OSU up 1-0.

It was all ASU after that as they added four in the fourth with an RBI single from Bianca Cruz and a three-run shot to center field from Rhiannon Baca. The Sun Devils added three more in the fifth with a solo shot from Mindy Cowles followed up with runs from Kaitlin Cochran and Clarissa Andorfer-Lopez.

The Sun Devils now sit on a 16-1 record with one game remaining to play in the Palm Springs Classic. They will face-off with Long IslandUniversity Sunday at 1 p.m. at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif.
