Oregon's Tajaun Porter Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week

OREGON guard Tajaun Porter has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for February 19-25.

Porter, a freshman from Detroit, Mich., averaged 20.0 points as he shot 10-of-18 (.556) from the field, 7-of-12 (.583) from three-point range, and 13-of-14 (.929) from the free throw line in victories over Washington State and Washington. In the 64-59 win over No. 9 Washington State, Porter scored 11 points in a two minute span in the second half to lead Oregon to a come-from-behind victory over the Cougars. He scored 21 points, hitting 6-of-9 from the field, 4-of-6 from three-point range and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. In the 93-85 win over Wahington, he added 19 points to go with a pair of steals and a pair of assists.

Porter needs one more three-pointer to tie Jason Kapono's Pac-10 fresman record of 82 set in 2000.

This is the first weekly honor for Porter and Oregon's 27th Player of the Week all-time.

• ARIZONA won for the 24th time in 25 meetings with Arizona State, ran its win streak to 12 over the Sun Devils, and swept the series for the fifth straight year... The 61 points scored against the Sun Devils were the fewest scored by Arizona against ASU since the Sun Devils posted a 53-52 victory over the Wildcats in 1995... Freshman F Chase Budinger has hit 12-of-26 (.462) from three-point range over the last four games... With 650 career assists, senior guard Mustafa Shakur needs three more to move into seventh on the Pac-10's all-time list ... With nine league victories, Arizona has now posted a Pac-10 record of .500 or better for the 23rd consecutive season... The last two times Arizona finished the regular season on the road in the Bay Area, it followed up with successful postseason runs with a national title in 1997 and a national runner-up finish in 2001.

• ARIZONA STATE is 1-6 in the last seven games, but the losses were by five, one, four (twice), six and three points... ASU has played 13 games decided by five points or less on the year, including seven in Pac-10 play... Three freshmen are averaging more than 28 minutes per game in Pac-10 play. Derek Glasser leads the way with 32.9 per game, third on the ASU list behind former Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year Byron Scott (34.2 in 1979-80) and Ike Diogu (33.3 in 2002-03)... Christian Polk needs six three-pointers to match the ASU freshmen record set by Ron Riley in 1992-93 (66)... ASU has held Arizona (61), Oregon (55) and Washington State (48) to season lows in points.

• CALIFORNIA shot by the school's season three-point record last weekend. The Bears nailed 18 treys (8 at UCLA, 10 at USC) to push their season total to 212 buckets from beyond the arc. The previous best was 198 three-pointers during the 2002-03 season. Six different players have collected at least 20 treys this season - Ryan Anderson (50), Ayinde Ubaka (48), Omar Wilkes (31), Jerome Randle (23), Theo Robertson (23), and Eric Vierneisel (20)... Freshman F Ryan Anderson is on pace to be the third freshman to lead Cal in scoring since 1996. Former Golden Bear Leon Powe (15.1 ppg) accomplished the feat in 2004 on his way to earning Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors, while Shareef Abdur-Rahim (21.1 ppg) did the same in 1996 and picked up Pac-10 Freshman and Pac-10 Player of the Year honors. At 16.5 points per game, Anderson ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in scoring

• OREGON With 81 three-pointers on the season, freshman G Tajuan Porter has moved into Oregon's single-season Top 10 list and needs one more the match the Pac-10 freshman record of 82 three-pointers set by UCLA's Jason Kapono in 2000... The Ducks are 15-2 at home this season. With one game remaining at Mac Court, they have a shot to match the school's single-season home win total of 16 (achieved in 1937-38 and 2001-02)... Oregon is the only school in the country to have defeated three different top 10 teams this season - No. 1 UCLA, No. 10 Arizona and No. 9 Washington State... Winning the close ones. Oregon is now 11-4 in games decided by eight points or less (9-4 in Pac-10 games). Compare that to last season when Oregon was 2-14 in such contests. The 11 'close' wins are the most since Oregon went 12-5 in games decided by an eight-point margin or less in 1999-00... Senior G Aaron Brooks' 30-point game versus Washington last Saturday helped him maintain his Pac-10 scoring lead at 18.0 ppg. Brooks is being chased by UCLA's Arron Afflalo and (17.5 ppg) and USC's Nick Young (17.2 ppg). Oregon hasn't had a Pac-10 scoring leader since Terrell Brandon in 1991 (26.6 ppg).

• OREGON STATE Guard Josh Tarver leads all Pac-10 freshmen in assists, averaging 3.97 per game (119 assists). He needs eight more assists to move into the second spot on OSU's all-time freshman list. The top spot is out of reach as Gary Payton posted 229 assists in 1986-87... Senior C Kyle Jeffers needs four blocked shots to reach 100 for his career. Only three other Beavers in school history have collected 100 or more blocks in a career... Junior F Marcel Jones has posted 47 steals on the season. It's the most thefts in a season by a Beaver since Deaundra Tanner had 50 swipes during the 1997-98 season. Jones ranks fourth in the Pac-10 with 1.57 steals per game. Jones has a steal in 28 of 30 games this season, including the last 20 consecutive games.

• STANFORD freshman F Brook Lopez has averaged 23 points and 8.3 rebounds over the last four games, while shooting a combined 39-of-72 (.542) from the field ... With 166 team blocks this season, the Cardinal need two more to establish a school single-season record. The 1999-2000 squad posted 167 rejections. Robin (66 blocks) and Brook Lopez (43 blocks) have accounted for 109 blocks - that's more than seven other Pac-10 teams have accumulated for the season... The Cardinal are 6-1 at home in Pac-10 play, having won each of their last six league contests at Maples Pavilion. In those last six league wins, Stanford holds a +10.0 scoring margin (74.5 ppg - 64.5 ppg). In addition, the Cardinal are shooting 157-of-323 (.486), while holding the opposition to 153-of-393 (.389) during those six games.

• UCLA has a 20-game winning streak at Pauley Pavilion, including the last 14 Pac-10 games... The Bruins finished the 2007 home slate undefeated (16-0) for the first time since 1995 (15-0). The last time UCLA finished the home portion of its schedule with a 16-0 record was during the 1975 season... The Bruins lead the Pac-10 in scoring margin (+10.7). The last time UCLA posted a double digit margin was during its national championship season of 1995 (+13.6)... Junior G Arron Afflalo had the hot hand from beyond the arc last weekend as he hit 6-of-9 (.667) from three-point range. He has 194 career three-pointers and needs four more treys to move past Tracy Murray into second on UCLA's career list... The Bruins have posted 25 or more wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1978 (25-3) and 1979 (25-5) seasons.

• USC senior G Lodrick Stewart set a USC career record when he hit his 219th career three-pointer during the second half against Stanford. Stewart passed former Trojan Brandon Granville who collected 218 treys from 1999-2002... With 987 career points, junior G Gabe Pruitt needs 13 more points to join teammates Stewart (1,369 points) and junior F Nick Young (1,338 points) with 1,000 career points. Three USC players with reaching 1,000 points in the same season a USC record? Nope. The 2000-01 Trojan squad featured four players in the lineup at season's end with 1,000 career points - Brian Scalabrine (1,441), Jeff Trepagnier (1,128), Sam Clancy (1,046) and Brandon Granville (1,030)... In 101 seasons of USC basketball, the Trojans have posted their 16th 20-win season. Only seven times have the Trojans posted more than 21 victories in a season, with the school record set at 24 wins (1974, 1992, 2001).

• WASHINGTON freshman C Spencer Hawes has scored in double figures in each of the last six games. During that span, he's averaging 18.3 points and shooting 45-of-85 (.529) from the field... Sophomore G Justin Dentmon became the ninth player in school history with two 100-assist seasons... Junior G Ryan Appleby posted his third 20-plus point outing of the season with 21 points Saturday at Oregon. He was 5-of-10 from three-point range giving him 71 three-pointers for the season. He's the only Husky ever to produce two 70 three-point field goal seasons. His two-year total of 141 three-pointers ranks third on the school's all-time list behind Deon Luton (212, 1997-2000) and Curtis Allen (151, 2001-04)... The Huskies host USC and UCLA this week and have swept the LA schools at home each of the last two seasons... Washington is 15-2 at home this season, averaging 83.9 points per game in Bank of America Arena. Meanwhile, it has struggled on the road to a 1-10 record, while averaging 68.5 points per game.

• WASHINGTON STATE earned its 22nd win this season, its most since 23 victories in 1982-83... The Cougars' 11 Pac-10 victories are their most since posting a 14-4 league record in 1982-83... Sophomore C Aaron Baynes scored a season-high 14 points and added six rebounds in the win at Oregon State... Junior G Kyle Weaver became the first player in Pac-10 history to record to combination of 300 points, 125 assists, 125 rebounds, 50 steals and 35 blocked shots in a season... The Cougars host UCLA Thursday and are looking for their first home win over the Bruins since 1993... Washington State is expecting sellouts for its final two home games, which would push the season attendance total over 100,000. It would mark the second time in Friel Court history that WSU posted a season attendance figure in excess of 100,000 fans (110,206 fans in 1980)... Coach Tony Bennett joins UCLA's Ben Howland as one of 15 finalists for the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award.
