Oregon's Jennifer Salling Named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week
Feb. 27, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - OREGON freshman Jennifer Salling has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 20-26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
After redshirting the 2006 season, Salling has burst onto the scene for the Ducks this season, and posted dominant numbers at the plate last week in six more Oregon victories. After dropping the first game of the season, Oregon has now won a school-record 15-straight games.
Oregon won a road contest at San Diego, then went 5-0 at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. Salling had a hit in every game and multiple hits in five out of the six. For the week, Salling hit a dominating .722 (13-of-18), highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance against Siena College that included two triples, a home run and six runs driven in. The Oregon offense generated 42 runs over the six games, and Salling knocked in 11 of them and scored eight of her own. She hit her third home run of the season on Saturday against North Dakota State.
For the week, Salling had a slugging percentage of 1.278, an on-base percentage of .960, and also stole three bases. A native of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Salling is now hitting .500 for the year, good for second in the Pac-10. She leads the Conference in RBI with 22.
Oregon (15-1) had the highest jump of any team in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 this week, climbing eight spots from 25 to 17. This week the Ducks head to Hawai'i to compete in the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu from March 1-4.
This is the first career Player of the Week honor for Salling, and the 27th Player/Pitcher of the Week all-time for Oregon. It is the first Player of the Week honor for Oregon since Kayleen Hudson won the honor on March 30, 2004.
