No. 5 Bruins Pound No. 14 Pepperdine, 6-1

Feb. 28, 2007

LOS ANGELES - In a battle between the last two NCAA Champions, the fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rebounded after losing the doubles point and eventually stormed back to take a 6-1 victory over No. 14 Pepperdine at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Wednesday. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 9-2 overall and avenge last year's loss to the Waves in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Pepperdine, which has now lost five in a row, moves to 7-6 on the year.

Wednesday's match began with a very tight battle for the one point awarded for doubles play. After Pepperdine took an 8-4 victory at court No. 3, the Bruins battled back to register an 8-2 win of their own at court No. 1. All attention then turned to court No. 2, where Pepperdine's Andre Begemann and Mahmoud Kamel edged UCLA's Haythem Abid/Mathieu Dehaine, 8-6.

Although it marked only the third time in 11 matches that UCLA has lost the doubles point, the Bruins came out unfazed in singles play, taking the first set on all six courts. Senior Philipp Gruendler evened the score at 1-1, as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Richard Johnson at court No. 3. UCLA took a 2-1 lead just minutes later when junior Jeremy Drean lost just four games en route to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kamel at court No. 6.

In the only match featuring two ranked opponents on Wednesday, fifth-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel downed the 15th-ranked Begemann, 6-3, 6-3 at court No. 1. It marked Kohlloeffel's 11th-straight win, pushing his record to 19-2 on the season (11-0 in dual matches). That victory set up Abid to clinch the match at court No. 2, as he gave UCLA a 4-1 lead by downing Bassam Beidas a 6-4, 6-3.

In the final two matches of the afternoon, UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine (court No. 4) and Michael Look (court No. 5) each won in 10-point tiebreakers in place of a third set.

Wednesday's match was the Bruins' final home contest until they host Oregon on March 30. Several players will be competing at this week's Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla, Calif. UCLA's next dual match is on March 9 at USC.
