Erin McCleave Qualifies for NCAA Championships

PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Erin McCleave has qualified for the second straight year to compete at the 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. March 8-10.

McCleave will represent WSU in three events at the NCAA meet. McCleave will swim the 500 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and the 1650 freestyle events and is seeded eighth, 25th, and 11th in each event, respectively. Her No. 8 seeding in the 500 freestyle is the highest seeding ever by a WSU swimmer at the national championship meet. In 1999, Erin Eldridge was seeded ninth in the 200 breaststroke.

The Rutherglen, Australia native owns the WSU record in each event she qualified for and earned the highest WSU finish ever at the Pac-10 Championships with a second place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:43.46), earning an NCAA automatic cut. This season, McCleave set five Gibb Pool records and two school records en route to culminating one of the most successful swimming careers in WSU history. In addition to earning NCAA automatic times in the 1650 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, she also posted 14 NCAA 'B' Consideration Standard times and swam six career best times. At the 2006 NCAA Championships, McCleave finished 11th overall in the 1650 freestyle to become the third swimmer in WSU history to be named an All-American.

The Pac-10 Conference had 80 swimmers qualify for the Division I NCAA meet, the highest number of athletes from any conference to participate in the meet. The Pac-10 and the Big 12 are the only two conferences to have swimmers from every member institution competing at the championship meet. The Pac-10 also owns the top seed in four of the five relay events and eight of the 13 individual events.
