Hodge, Muller Advance to Round of 16 at Pacific Coast Doubles

Cardinal Assistant Coach David Hodge and sophomore Blake Muller won two matches today at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship to advance to the Round of 16. The Cardinal duo won both their matches in straight sets in today's first round of competition at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Stanford had three other doubles teams competing in the tournament, which concludes on Sunday.
Hodge and Muller beat Bobby Hrdina and Bradley Klahn, an independent team, 6-2, 7-6 (5), in the Round of 64, then came back in the Round of 32 to defeat Robert Sabo and Billy Timu, 6-2, 6-3. They will face Adam Loucks and Garrett Snyder of USC Saturday in a Round of 16 match. Hodge, in his third year as a Cardinal assistant coach, is eligible to play in the tournament as an independent.
In other action, freshman Paul Morrissey and Richard Wire won their match in the Round of 64, 6-1, 6-2 over Phillip Bayliss and Nick Tuxen of St. Joseph's, but then lost in the Round of 32 to Kaes Van't Hof and Robert Farah of USC, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2.
Kevin Kaiser and David Ryan were beaten in the Round of 64 by Bijan Moallemi and Kazumi Negishi of UC San Diego, 6-2, 6-4. Eric McKean and Jeff Zeller also lost in the Round of 64 as they dropped a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (4) decision to Tobias Schell and Ralph Knupfee of Rice.
In addition to Hodge and Muller competing in tomorrow's Round of 16 match, both Kaiser and Ryan, and McKean and Zeller will compete in the consolation round. Morrissey and Wire have concluded play in the tournament.
