March 2, 2007
Las Vegas - Fresno State scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge the 18th-ranked California Golden Bears, 2-1 at the UNLV Invitational on Friday morning. Cal faces Delaware State later this afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
The Bears (11-7) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when Taylor Kelly delivered an RBI double to right field which scored Vernae Sevilla, who drew a leadoff walk, from second base, giving Cal a 1-0 lead.
Cal starting pitcher, Lauren Frankiewicz, kept the Bulldog offense quiet in the third, fourth, and fifth innings all the way until the sixth before Fresno State's Nichole Willis doubled to right field scored Haley Perkins to knot the score at 1-1. Lisamarie Coronado followed with a single thru the middle to plate Willis, giving FSU the 2-1 lead.
California had one last chance to tie the score in the top of the seventh, but Alex Sutton was left stranded on second base ending a possible rally.
Frankiewicz (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Cal managed just two hits off Fresno State starter, Robin Macklin.
