Anteaters Earn Doubleheader Split In Nightcap
March 3, 2007
SEATTLE - UC Irvine scored six runs in the second inning and coasted to a 17-3 win over the Washington baseball team in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Husky Ballpark. The win earned the Anteaters (11-4-1) a split in the doubleheader and also leveled the three-game series at one win apiece.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, UW designated hitter Ty Rasmussen's solo homer accounted for the game's only run as the Huskies won, 1-0.
In the nightcap, Washington starter Nick Haughian (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) in just one and one-third innings. Anteaters right-hander Wes Etheridge improved to 5-0 on the season with the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings.
Junior Johnny DuRocher made his UW baseball debut, working the final two innings. After a 1-2-3 eighth, he gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits in the ninth. The former Husky quarterback saw his football career come to an end last November when a brain tumor was discovered and surgically removed.
After having been shut out in the opener, Irvine took no time at all to scored in game two. After leading off the game with a single, Taylor Holiday took second on a bunt, third on a passed ball and came home on a wild pitch to give UCI a 1-0 lead.
However, the UW (2-7) answered back in the bottom of the first as Bradley Boyer led off with a triple and scored on a two-out wild pitch.
In the second, Irvine took back the lead with six runs. After singles from Tony Asaro and Jeff Cusick, catcher Francis Larson laced a homer to right field. After a walk, Taylor Holiday drove in a run with a double, staking UCI with a 5-1 lead and ending the day for Husky starter Nick Haughian, who was relieved by Jason Erickson. After a second out, Anteaters second baseman Cody Cipriano belted a long home run to left, making it 7-1.
Tyler Vaughn's two-out RBI single in the third increased the lead to 8-1.
After the UW got one run in the fifth, Cipriano, who was robbed of a home run in the first game of the day, hit his second two-run homer of game two in the sixth and Matt Morris hit a solo shot later in the sixth, stretching the advantage to 11-2. Irvine added four more in the seventh to close out the offensive explosion.
Washington got a run in the eighth as three UW freshmen -- Russell, Lind and Cherry -- all notched their first career hits. After singles from Russell and Lind, Cherry doubled to drive in a run.
Boyer led the Husky offense, finishing the game 3-for-5 with a single, a double and a triple. Cipriano went 2-for-4 with the two homers and four RBI to lead UC Irvine.
The Huskies and UC Irvine close out the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Live video and live stats will be available at gohuskies.com
