Charters Blasts Walk-Off Home Run Vs. #6 LSU

March 3, 2007

SEATTLE-- Washington junior Ashley Charters belted a ninth-inning three-run walk-off home run vs. sixth-ranked LSU Saturday as the 14th-ranked UW softball team defeated the Tigers 3-1 at the Husky Softball Classic. The win improves the Huskies' record to 14-2, while LSU falls to 21-2.

Sophomore pitcher Danielle Lawrie tossed a gem, taking a perfect game into the ninth inning and eventually giving up just one hit and striking out 20 batters. The 20 strikeouts ties her own school record set two weeks ago against 24th-ranked South Florida.

LSU did not record a hit until the top of the ninth inning. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect and a runner beginning the inning on second base, Kristen Hobbs popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt and it dropped in just behind first baseman Dena Tyson to put runners on the corners with no outs. Lawrie struck out the next two batters but the runner at third got caught off the bag and drew a throw from catcher Alicia Matthews. The throw was high and sailed into left field and Dee Dee Henderson was able to score the go-ahead run. Lawrie got out of the inning with a pop-up to Charters in foul territory.

The Huskies had runners on base every inning but could not break through until Charter's ninth inning home run, her first of the season. The blast scored Lauren Greer, who was on second base to begin the inning, and Dani Stuart, who drew a full-count walk.

Lawrie (9-1) picked up the win and recorded her Pac-10 Conference leading ninth double-digit strikeout game of the season.

Emily Turner (8-1) took the loss for LSU as she allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out eight.

Washington stranded 11 base runners on the day, while the Tigers left two on base.

Charters finished the day 2-for-5 with a double and a home run, while Dominique Lastrapes went 2-for-4.

The teams will wrap up the Husky Softball Classic Sunday with a game at noon. Fans unable to make it out to Husky Softball Stadium can follow along on GameTracker on
