March 3, 2007

The USC women's 800-meter relay team set a school record and junior Kai Kelley won both hurdles men's races to highlight the Trojan Relays in front of 1,500 fans at USC's Loker Stadium on Saturday (March 3).

The Women of Troy's 800-meter relay quartet of Candice Davis, Elizabeth Olear, Myra Hasson and anchor Carol Rodriguez blazed to a winning time of 1:32.87, breaking a 21-year-old school mark by 3.43 (1:36.30 set in 1986 by Myra Mayberry, Gervaise McCraw, Leslie Maxie and Robin Simmons).

Kelley, a junior who won All-American honors in 2006, won the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.93 and he then came back to capture the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 51.19. He also led off USC's winning 1600-meter relay team that ran 3:08.88 (other members were DeSean Cunningham, Sheldon Evans and anchor Lionel Larry).

Other USC men's winners were seniors William Denbo in the shot put (60-3 1/4), 2005 Pac-10 hammer throw champ and 2006 runnerup Adam Midles (218-9) and Inman Breaux in the triple jump (48-11 3/4) and freshman Aaron Dan in the discus throw (177-11), plus the Trojan 1600-meter sprint relay (3:25.84; Justin Threat, Ryan Simmons, Lionel Larry, Colin Campbell).

Other Women of Troy individual victors were senior Candice Davis in the 110-meter hurdles (13.26), freshman Shalina Clarke in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.62), senior Chun Mei Nickles (12-1 ½) and sophomore Eva Orban (208-3), who won the 2006 Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional titles and was the runnerup at the NCAA meet. USC's other women's relay victories came in the 400-meter relay (44.16; Jessica Onyepunuka, Candice Davis, Talia Stewart, Carol Rodriguez), 1600-meter relay (3:36.62, Myra Hasson, Elizabeth Olear, Tara Davis-Quarrie, Carol Rodriguez) and 800-meter sprint relay (1:41.54; Michelle Sanford, Tara Davis-Quarrie, Jessica Onyepunuka, Emilie Winckel).

Three former Trojans won events: 4-time NCAA outdoor/indoor high jump champion Jesse Williams (7-4 ½), 2001 NCAA pole vault champ Dennis Kholev (17-6 ½) and discus thrower Kate Hutchinson (175-9).

Ekenechukuw Anene, competing unattached, won a pair of women's events: the high jump (5-3) and triple jump (39-3 3/4).

USC hosts two more track meets at Loker Stadium: the Trojan Invitational on March 23-24 and the annual dual with UCLA on April 28. Next week (March 10), the Trojan men and women will participate in the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton.
