Knutson Gets 500th Win As UW Beats SUU, 7-1

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team beat Southern Utah, 7-1, Monday evening at Husky Ballpark to give 15th-year head coach Ken Knutson his 500th career victory.
Knutson, an All-Pac-10 pitcher at the UW in 1981, improved his career record to 500-328-2. He is just the 17th coach in Pac-10 history to record 500 wins and was already the winningest baseball coach in school history.
UW sophomore Jason Erickson (1-1), a righty from White River High, earned the win in his first college start. He allowed one run on five hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Lefty Nick Hagadone worked four no-hit innings for his second save. Washington improved to 3-8 on the season while the Thunderbirds fell to 2-14.
A day after being one-hit by UC Irvine, the Huskies didn't take much time to get started Monday. After Bradley Boyer led off the first by reaching on an error, Lentz singled to put runners at the corners. Hague followed with his first home run of the season to put the UW on top, 3-0.
After the homer, the Huskies loaded the bases on a two singles and a walk. After an out, Matt Stevens' sacrifice fly drove in a fourth run.
Boyer led off the second inning with a double and scored all the way from second on a wild pitch. Later in the second, Conley walked, stole second and scored on a single from Rasmussen, increasing the lead to 6-0 after two innings.
SUU posted its run in the third as, with runners on the corners, Ricardo Alvarez grounded into a double play to send a run home.
In the fifth, Husky shortstop Brian Pearl, a freshman from Everett's Cascade High, belted his first UW home run, a solo shot down the right-field line.
Thunderbirds starter Jacob Noyes (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits over an inning and two-thirds.
