Lovemark, Hie Lead USC Into 1st At USC Collegiate
March 5, 2007
Freshmen Jamie Lovemark and Rory Hie posted a pair of blistering second rounds to lead a resurgent No. 8 USC into first place after 36 holes of the 30th annual USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch C.C. in Westlake Village, Calif., on Monday (March 5).
Trailing by 10 shots after a 291-shot first round, USC combined for a tournament-low 277 to finish with a two-round 568 for par. No. 2 Stanford, three shots back after the first round, is a stroke back in second at 569 (+1). No. 7 UCLA, which shot a first-round low 281, is in third at 570 (+2) while Tennessee, tied with the Cardinal after the first round in second place, is now in fourth at 574 (+4). The next closest team is California in fifth at 585 (+17).
Lovemark's streak of seven consecutive rounds under 70 was snapped with a 1-over 72 first round, but the freshman came back to tear up the course with a second-round, 7-under 64 to tie for the individual lead at 136 (-6). He is tied with Loyola Marymount's Brian Locke.
Lovemark, ranked No. 2 in the country by Golfweek.com and USC's highest finisher in four of five events this year as well as a top 5 finisher three times, eagled the 8th hole in the second round and made another four birdies on the back 9 en route to his 64. It was the best round of the season for the freshman and his ninth round in the 60s this season.
Hie, who didn't have a round under 71 in his first three tournaments of the season, turned in his fourth and fifth sub-70s in his last six rounds with a first-round 69 and a second-round 68. Hie's 137 (-5) was good for a third-place tie with UCLA's Erik Flores and Tennessee's Phillip Pettitt, one shot back of the lead.
Like Lovemark, Hie eagled the 8th hole during his second round (making up for a pair of bogeys on the previous two holes) and then posted a 3-under on the back 9, just as he did during his first round.
Senior Jordan Nasser opened with a 75 and finished with a 73, tying for 39th at 148 (+6). Among Nasser highlights was birdying the par-5 15th hole twice.
Senior Joshua Wooding joined Nasser in a tie for 39th. Wooding rebounded from his first-round 76 with a second-round 1-over 72. His steady second round featured a birdie and two bogeys.
Sophomore Tom Glissmeyer, USC's highest finisher in its most recent tournament, rounded out USC's fivesome tied for 51st with a 151 (+9) after rounds of 75 and 76.
Four Trojans, playing individually, saw their first tournament action of the season. Sophomore Ryan Linton was the highest finisher among them, finishing tied for 34th at 147 (+5) after a 75 and 72. Sophomore Lee Harris was just back of him with a 148 (+6) after a 71 and 77, tied for 39th.
