UC Riverside Shuts Down No. 20/21 USC, 4-1

March 6, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Mark Rzepczynski threw a complete game six-hitter Tuesday as the UC Riverside Highlanders defeated the No. 20/21 USC Trojans, 4-1, in a nonconference game at Dedeaux Field. The UCR left-hander kept the Trojans off-balance to snap USC's winning streak at four games.

UC Riverside improved to 11-7 on the season while USC fell to 13-8 overall. Rzepczynski allowed just one run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Jaime Pedroza went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI for the Highlanders. USC got another strong pitching performance from Anthony Vasquez (1-4), who went 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Mike Vass hit his fourth homer of the season for UC Riverside with a solo shot to center in the second for the early 1-0 lead. The Trojans' biggest threat came in the second when they loaded the bases with one out. Roberto Lopez's RBI sacrifice fly produced USC's lone run of the evening, scoring Johnny Bowden. Key double plays by the Highlanders ended the Trojans' fifth and sixth innings as Pedroza's solo home run in the sixth provided the lead for good.

USC travels to Stanford this weekend (March 9-11) for a nonconference series at Sunken Diamond. Friday's game starts at 5 p.m. with a 1 p.m. game time for Saturday and Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
