Samaniego Earns All-American Diving Honors at NCAA Championships

Marisa Samaniego dove to the first All-American honor of her career on Thursday evening as the sophomore finished sixth on the one-meter board at the NCAA Swim & Dive Championships in Minneapolis, MN. The Bruins are currently in 21st place with 13 points after six events. Arizona leads all teams with 168 points.

Samaniego was on fire from the opening round of dives, ending the prelims with a new school record (by 25 points) and lifetime-best score (by 30 points) of 320.25. After the prelims, Samaniego was eighth overall, and moved up to sixth in the final, ending the day with a score of 333.25 (which was another school record).

'I'm so proud of this kid,' said dive coach Tom Stebbins. 'She had a huge morning and carried over to the finals tonight. It's so great to see her get her first All-American honor.'

Seniors Sara Clark and Amanda Blong also competed on one-meter with Clark finishing 20th with a score of 298.35 and Blong placing 27th with a score of 284.15. Clark's score also would have been a new school record.

'Both Sara and Amanda missed a dive in the second round, but competed awesome after those mistakes,' added Stebbins.

All three will compete on three-meter on Friday.

In swimming action, senior Katie Nelson finished 29th in the 500 Free in a time of 4:47.73. In the 50 Freestyle, sophomore Anna Poteete was 32nd (22.90), senior Katie Arnold placed 42nd (23.06) and senior Amy Thurman placed 51st (23.19).

The 400 Medley Relay place 18th in a time of 3:41.90.

Tomorrow's action features the 200 Medley Relay, Thurman in the 100 Fly, Poteete and Nelson in the 200 Freestyle, Nicolette Teo in the 100 Breast and Arnold in the 100 Back. Three-meter diving will also be contested on Friday.
