Cal Relay Breaks School Record at NCAA Championships
March 9, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - California set a new school record in the men's distance medley relay when it ran a 9:33.77 to take second place at the NCAA Track and Field Indoor Championships on Friday at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Center. The Golden Bears foursome of junior David Torrence, senior Nestor Solis, sophomore Francis Gadayan and senior Kevin Davis broke the record of 9:34.99 that Cal set when it won the title at the MPSF Indoor Championships on Feb. 23.
On Friday, Stanford won the DMR in a time of 9:33.64.
'What a great race,' Cal assistant coach Tony Sandoval said. 'The announcer kept talking about the big rivalry between Stanford and Cal. He said there was the Big Game, the Big Splash, the Big Series, the Big Meet and now the Big DMR. It was great.
'I couldn't be prouder of them. We didn't talk about winning. We talked about doing our very, very best. They really, really competed like champions today. This whole week has been surreal. We didn't know if we were going to win, but we knew we were going to run well.'
Bears sophomore Inika McPherson took seventh place in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters (6-0), tying the season-best mark she set at the UW Last-Chance Qualifier on March 3 in Seattle, Wash. Georgia's Patty Sylvester won the women's high jump with a mark of 1.89 (6-2.25).
Cal junior Alysia Johnson, who took third place in the women's 800-meter final at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, ran a 2:05.17 in the 800 to reach Saturday's final. Johnson's time was the second fastest in the prelim behind that of Michigan's Katie Erdman (2:04.54).
On Saturday, Cal junior Ed Wright competes in the men's high jump, junior teammate Cassandra Strickland competes in the women's triple jump, Johnson runs in the women's 800-meter final, and senior teammate Giliat Ghebray runs in the men's 3,000 meters
