Rebecca Soni Earns Second Consecutive All-American Honors

Sophomore Rebecca Soni earned All-American honors in the 100y breast for the second straight season to lead USC on the second day of the 2007 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis on Friday (March 9).

Soni, who qualified third in the prelims in 1:00.45, finished sixth in the championship final in 1:00.63. According to USC records, Soni is the first Trojan ever to earn 100y breast All-American honors in consecutive years. A year ago, she was second. On Saturday, she will attempt to defend her 2006 NCAA title in the 200y breast.

Senior Kristina Sieper posted a career best 23rd in the 100y breast in 1:02.39. Sophomore Katy Houston was 29th (1:02.83) and sophomore Missy McIntyre was 37th (1:04.70).

In addition to the 100y breast, Soni swam the 400y IM in prelims, finishing 35th in 4:21.39.

Sophomore Kristen Lahey took 28th in the 100y fly (54.56) while junior Emily Goetsch was 38th (55.04).

Junior Hayley McGregory was 19th in the 100y back (54.31) while Lahey, swimming her second event of the day, was 21st (54.39).

Sophomore Rachael Waller was 55th in the 200y free (1:49.76) and freshman Whitney Stephenson was 69th (1:51.15).

USC's 200y medley relay of McGregory, Houston, Lahey and Waller swam in the consolation final, finishing 15th overall in 1:40.85.

In the timed final of the 800y free, USC's foursome of Waller, junior Whitney Hentzen, junior Brittany Allen, and freshman Whitney Stephenson finished 20th overall with a time of 7:22.03.

The meet concludes Saturday with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m. (CST).
