March 11, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - Powered with a 2-for-3 performance from Mindy Cowles, who brought in four of her five RBIs with a walk-off grand slam, the No. 3 Arizona State Softball team took another tournament crown on Sunday afternoon as they beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders 12-3 in five innings in the championship game of the Pac-10 vs. Big XII Challenge. The Sun Devils now hold a 27-2 overall record on the season.

A single to right from TTU's Jennifer Bowers gave the Red Raiders the first run of the game in the top of the second, but ASU gave a quick answer, grabbing seven in the bottom of the inning as they rattled off four hits, one a bases loaded walk-off grand slam from Mindy Cowles, her third home run of the season.

Texas Tech added on two more in the third and fourth inning before ASU slammed the door shut with a five run hitting spree in the fourth inning with a huge two RBI double from Bianca Cruz and another RBI single through the left side from Mindy Cowles, as Megan Elliott took her 13th win of the season in five innings.

The Sun Devils currently hold at 27-2 on the season as they gear up to hit the road next week to face off in the Judi Garmen Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The Sun Devils are slated to play Notre Dame, FresnoState and Louisiana-Lafayette before heading into bracket play.
