No. 23 UCLA Baseball Drops Rubber Game at No. 16 Ole Miss, 4-1

Oxford, Miss. - The No. 23 UCLA baseball team lost to No. 16 Ole Miss, 4-1, in the series' rubber match Sunday afternoon before 4,710 fans at Oxford-University Stadium. Left-hander Gavin Brooks (1-2) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking one in a career-best 5.2 innings.

Ole Miss right-hander Brett Bukvich (3-1) earned the victory, allowing one run off five hits in 7.2 innings. Bukvich recorded three strikeouts and issued one walk. Scott Biddle threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out five. Rebel left fielder Justin Henry led Ole Miss at the plate, hitting 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

The Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI double by designated hitter C.J. Ketchum. Ole Miss loaded the bases on a walk, infield single and hit by pitch to begin the inning. Ketchum plated right fielder Jordan Henry and left fielder Justin Henry with one out.

Ole Miss struck for one more run in the second when Jordan Henry's groundout sent home second baseman Zach Miller from third. Miller led off the inning with a double and took third on a sacrifice bunt.

UCLA scored in the fifth inning, cutting Ole Miss' lead to 3-1. Designated hitter Cody Decker led off the inning with a double to left and advanced to third on an ensuing wild pitch. Left fielder Will Penniall's groundout to second plated Decker.

The Rebels added a run in the sixth after second baseman Zach Miller reached with a hard comebacker to Brooks to lead off the inning. With two outs, Justin Henry doubled to right field, bringing home Miller from first.

The Bruins return to action Tuesday evening when they will host Long Beach State at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. Following's Tuesday's contest against the Dirtbags, UCLA will play a three-game series at San Diego State (March 16-18).

Game Notes: Gavin Brooks struck out three batters in the first inning and tied his career high with four (Feb. 18 vs. East Carolina)...Brooks made 102 pitches through 5.2 innings and needed just nine in the fourth and 10 in the fifth...Brophy struck out one batter in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
