Huskies Face Washington State in Apple Cup of Tennis

    UPCOMING WEEK: The Husky women's tennis team (1-9, 0-4 Pac-10) end a 15-day break with a non-conference battle at No. 42 Washington State (10-6, 0-4) on Sunday, March 18 at noon. The match will be the first of five in 13 days for the Huskies. Washington will then head to San Diego for a match against San Diego State on Tuesday, March 20 at noon.

    SCOUTING WSU: Washington State is 10-7 on the season, 0-4 in Pac-10 action and ranked No. 42 in the latest ITA poll. Sunday's match is the first of two Apple Cup of tennis battles that the Cougars and Huskies will take part in. WSU will visit Seattle on April 21 for a re-match. The Huskies hold the 43-7 advantage all-time against the Cougars. Last season, the two teams split the series. Washington won the first match, which was considered the non-conference match, 4-2 in Seattle on March 26, 2006. WSU avenged that loss with a 6-1 win on April 21, 2006 in Pullman. The Cougars are led by fourth-year Head Coach Lisa Hart.

    SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE: San Diego State is 5-7 this season and was knocked out of the ITA polls for the first time this season in the March 13 rankings. The Aztecs and Huskies are tied 5-5 in the all-time series. The Aztecs have won two-straight against the Huskies, including last year's match, 5-2, in Seattle on March 4, 2006. Washington last defeated San Diego State in 2004.

    HUSKIES ON TV: The Washington women's tennis team will be featured on The Tennis Channel's 'Inside Tennis With The Koz' on March 27 at 7 a.m. PT. The new 'Inside College Tennis' segment will feature a number of leading university tennis programs. The segment will provide viewers with highlights of the excitement of a dual match, interviews with coaches, players, university athletic directors and presidents and also a look at the school's ambience and local charm. The Tennis Channel was filming in Seattle during the UW-Michigan match on February 4.   • Freshman Joyce Ardies is the only Huskies with a better than .500 record in singles this season. She is 9-8 overall and has a team best 4 wins in dual matches.
  • The doubles duo of Tara Simpson and Melinda Wong are 5-5 in dual meet action and 8-5 overall, both tops for the Huskies. The Huskies sport a 8-22 doubles record in dual meets so far.
  • Washington is a 0-10 in the No. 1 and No. 4 singles slots in dual matches.
  • The Huskies are 7-10 in three-set matches this season. They also have a 7-4 record in sets that are decided by tie breakers.
