Men's Swimming And Diving Completes Day One Prelims At NCAA Championships

No. 2 men's swimming and diving began their first day of competition at the 2007 NCAA Championships with the prelim swims. Ben Wildman-Tobriner qualified for the finals in the 50 free with his record setting swim, while Shaun Phillips qualified as the No. 1 seed in the 500 free. Stanford also qualified as the second place relay team in the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
Day one began with the 200 free relay prelims as Stanford earned a second place finish with a time of 1:16.57, while Auburn took first in a time of 1:15.56. Ben Wildman-Tobriner set a new American and school record with his 50 free leadoff time of 19.03, which would stand for two races until he broke it again in the 50 free. The previous record of 19.05 was held by Tom Jager of Santa Clara (1990) and Anthony Ervin of Cal (2002).
Shaun Phillips took the top spot for the Cardinal in the 500 free prelims recording a time of 4:14.82. He was followed by Pac-10 foes Lauren Jensen of USC (4:15.05) and Jean Basson (4:15.17). Daniel Beal finished 11 (4:18.68) and Andy Grant placed 15 (4:20.43) to qualify for the consolation swim.
The 200 IM prelims got off to a bad start for the Cardinal as Keenan Newman DQ at the beginning of the race. Hongzhe Sun finished ninth (1:45.16), while Nate Cass (1:45.98) placed 14 to qualify for the consolation swim.
The 50 free prelims became a record setting swim once again for Wildman-Tobriner as he broke the American record which he set three races earlier and became only the third swimmer in history to go under 19.00 as he posted a 18.98. Alex Coville (19.58) placed 14 and Matt Crowe (19.62) finished 16 to qualify for the consolation swim.
In the final prelim race of the day Stanford qualified as the No. 2 team in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:08.58. Northwestern took first in the prelims posting a time of 3:07.78.
The lone diver for the Cardinal, Dwight Dumais, placed 13 in the 1-meter prelims as he posted a score of 320.55.
