UCLA Rowing Cruises Past San Diego State

March 17, 2007

Los Angeles - UCLA Women's Rowing continued its strong spring season by sweeping the visiting San Diego State Aztecs at Ballona Creek on Saturday, March 17. The Bruins' 6 boats finished ahead of SDSU in five races.

The first race of the morning featured each squad's second novice eights. Rowing into a slight outgoing tide, UCLA got off the line the fastest and established up an open water lead 500 meters into the race. After a spirited effort by SDSU brought them within striking distance, the Bruins responded to the home crowd to retake a solid lead. Through the last leg of the race, the UCLA boat kept its composure, finishing in a time of 7:31.5. The worn down Aztec boat came in at 7:44.7.

The next race pitted first novice eights. UCLA overcame poor steering early on to take a lead in the first 500 meters. Using aggressive rowing throughout, the Bruins established and extended a commanding lead over the Aztecs. The Bruins cruised past the finish line in 7:14.7. SDSU registered a time of 7:44.3.

The varsity 4+ race pitted two UCLA boats against the SDSU boat. After a clean start by all three boats, UCLA's `A' boat began to pull away 750 meters into the race, with UCLA `B' and SDSU battling behind. Halfway through, UCLA `B' took control of second place as UCLA `A' solidified its positioning. With 500 meters left and UCLA `A' long ago creating an open water lead, UCLA `B' kept its composure and finished the race strong ahead of SDSU's V4+. UCLA `A' finished in first place at 7:38.1. UCLA `B' pushed through in 7:48.9. SDSU recorded a time of 7:52.8.

Next up was the second varsity 8+ race. The SDSU boat enjoyed a fast start. Once both boats settled into their cadence, the Bruins proved to be too efficient for the Aztecs. The Bruins employed powerful rowing at an aggressive pace to pull ahead midway through the race. UCLA recorded a strong time of 6:52.6 to finish ahead of the Aztecs at 7:10.8.

The varsity eights hit the water for the final competition of the meet. Firing off strong right from the start, UCLA opened up a significant lead that they extended throughout by sticking to their race plan. A vigorous crowd, strong race plan, and intense effort from the UCLA varsity rowers resulted in a finish of 6:41.4. The Aztecs came through the finish line in 7:03.9.
