Huskies Cap Homestand With Eighth Straight Win, 9-2 Over Northridge

SEATTLE - Freshman shortstop Brian Pearl hit a two-run homer and a double as the Washington baseball team completed a three-game sweep and won its eighth in a row with a 9-2 victory over Cal State Northridge Sunday at Husky Ballpark.

Washington improved to 10-8 after going 9-3 during a 12-game homestand. Northridge (11-16) suffered its eighth straight loss.

UW sophomore starter Tyler Cheney (1-1) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. CSUN's Chuck Fick (0-4) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on five hits over his five innings of work.

Northridge took the early lead in the sercond inning. Catcher John Parham walked and, after moving tthird on another walk and a groundout, scored on a single from Jowen-James Murray Thornton, putting the visitors on top, 1-0.

The UW, however, tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second as Brett Kaluza scored on a two-out triple from Andy Lentz.

In the third, Washington rallied for four runs, all with two outs. After Ty Rasmussen singeld with two down, Pearl hit his second homer of the year to right-center. After a walk and a single, Kaluza drove in two more with a single, giving the Huskies a 5-1 lead.

Northridge picked up a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Jon Sakurai, but in the bottom of the inning, Pearl doubled and came in on a groundout to make it 6-2. In the sixth, Jake Rife doubled and scored on a double from Curt Rindal. Then, in the seventh, a solo homer from UW catcher Joey Dunn increased the lead to 8-2.

Washington added a ninth run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch. Pearl finished 2-for-4 while Lentz and Rindal added two hits apiece.

Two Huskies who had been held out due to injuries made their season debuts Sunday. Reliever Brandon McKerney threw a scoreless inning and catcher Max Kwan flied out in a pinch-hit at bat in the seventh.

The Huskies take to the road this week, with five games around the Northwest during spring break. Tuesday, the Dawgs take on Portland at 2:00 p.m. before facing Gonzaga at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in Spokane. Next weekend, the UW opens Pac-10 play vs. Washington State in Pullman.
