PULLMAN, Wash. - Nick Ison threw seven strong innings while Jim Murphy and Nick Hall added home runs as Washington State posted a 9-3 win over Illinois-Chicago in the series-finale Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

With the win the Cougars move to 12-7 and improve to 5-0 in series-ending games this season. The Flames fall to 5-10.

Ison held the Illinois-Chicago bats in check all afternoon as he worked a season-high seven innings, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts. He worked out of trouble in the first with runners and first and third and no outs before a double play and line drive to second ended the Flames threat.

Jim Murphy put the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the fourth with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot that brought home Paul Gran, who led off the inning with a single to center. In the fifth WSU added another run as with two outs and Scott Suttmeier on first, Gran lined his third triple of the series to right-center, increasing the lead to 3-0.

Cody Bartlett added WSU's second triple of the game in the sixth, scoring Zach Borba. Earlier in the frame Mike Gilbert scored on a wild pitch by Flame pitcher Adam Worthington.

That was more than enough for Ison who retired 14 of 15 at one point and did not give up a run until the seventh when with two outs, the Flames strung together three straight singles, the last by Tyler Moore that scored Micky Pingree. The Flames added a pair of runs in the ninth off reliever Ross Humes as Pingree doubled to deep center, scoring Larry Gempp Jr. Jake Carr then brought home Ben Trotter with an RBI groundout to short.

WSU put up three more runs in the seventh as Simi Reynolds had the big hit, a two-run double to left that scored Jeff Miller and Gilbert. Pinch-hitter Nick Hall added his first home run of the season in the eighth, a solo shot over the wall in right, closing out the Cougar scoring.

The Cougars collected 10 hits on the afternoon, two each by Gran, Gilbert and Bartlett.

Illinois-Chicago was paced by Pingree who had two of the Flames eight hits. Starter Joe Skinner suffered the loss as he went 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. He was the first of four pitchers on the afternoon for Illinois-Chicago.

The Cougars return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Spokane to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the final preseason tune-up before conference play opens Friday against Washington. First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m.
