No. 12 Pepperdine Beats No. 19 USC, 5-3

LOS ANGELES - Trent Diedrich and Adrian Ortiz broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with RBI groundouts as the No. 12 Pepperdine Waves defeated the No. 19 USC Trojans, 5-3, in a nonconference game at Dedeaux Field. Diedrich went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Denny Duron and Luke Salas registered three hits each.
The Waves (18-7) had 14 hits on the evening, stranding 12 runners as Adam Olbrychowski (5-1) beat USC for the second time this season. The Trojans fell to 16-10 on the season.
Freshman Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) put the Trojans ahead with a two-run double in the first before Pepperdine answered with two in the second. Duron and Diedrich hit back-to-back singles to tie the game. Mark Tracy led off the sixth with a single and moved to third on Duron's double to left center before the Waves scored twice.
Olbrychowski allowed two unearned runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings for the win while Brett Hunter pitched in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
Stock finished with a 2-for-4 night while senior closer Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) threw a perfect ninth to drop his season ERA to 0.61.
USC opens Pac-10 Conference play this weekend (March 23-25) against No. 17 Arizona State at home. Friday's game starts at 7 p.m. with a 1:30 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. beginning on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com. Sunday's game also will be Mini-Bat Day with the first 500 fans in attendance receiving a free USC baseball miniature bat.
